Paula Schiller

Paula Schiller is a painter and printmaker involved in creating lyrical interpretations of the landscape which convey both conscious and unconscious responses to the natural environment.  “I have explored several different approaches to the landscape.  In direct plein-air painting I have tried to communicate the feeling that attracted me to the site initially in a representational way.  At other times I have worked in my studio without a point of reference, attempting to create a more abstract evocation of a locale.  Often my paintings begin with a gestural response, seeking in an intuitive way to capture the essence of the landscape.  The work then changes and continues to reveal itself in the process.  The attempt is not so much to reproduce a recognizable scene as to evoke a sense of place.  Issues that concern me include a personal calligraphy, rhythm, color, luminosity, form, and composition.”
